History
Sir John Herschel invent the cyanotype procedure in 1842. It was mostly used for copying diagrams and worksheets, which is known as blueprints. Both ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide are mixed to create a solution that you then soak a piece of paper in. The paper then becomes sensitive to light through that process. Then you put the negative paper against a positive image and expose them to Ultra Violent Light. That then produces a negative copy of your positive image.
Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach)
The health box is rated as a 3, meaning extremely dangerous. The Flammability box is rated as a 0, meaning that it will not catch on fire. Finally, the reactivity box is also a 0, so it is is stable and will not react with water. If it comes in contact with your skin, it is very hazardous and you should immediately wash your skin with water for 15 minutes. You should remove and wash clothes if they come in contact with the chemical. Do not wear contacts when using chemical and if it does come in contact with eyes, wash out using water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Also, do not inhale and seek fresh air if you do.
Ferric ammonium citrate
The health box is listed as a 1, meaning the chemical is slightly hazardous. The flammability box is rated at a 1, meaning it will ignite if recently preheated. The reactivity is a 0 and stable, will not react to water. This is slightly hazardous if it comes into contact with your skin or eyes. . If the chemical comes in contact with your skin, wash with soap and water and seek medical attention if irritation develops. Do not wear contacts when using chemical and if it does come in contact with eyes, wash out using water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Also, do not inhale and seek fresh air if you do.
Potassium ferricyanide

- The color of the cyanotype emulsion was bright yellow when applied to the paper
- The paper then turned blue when placed in the sunlight because the solution on the paper was light sensitive.
- The white part of the paper let in light so the light sensitive paper behind it turned a grayish-blue color. The paper that had pencil writing on it turned a gray color as well but you can faintly see the writing.
- When the exposed areas and unexposed areas of the print was placed in the water, the contrast between the two colors became greater. The grayish-blue color turned into vibrant blue color and the penciled in parts on the paper turned white as the light sensitive solution was washed away.
- The final product did not turn out as clear as i thought it would. The glass on top of the papers was moved around a couple times so the print was messed up as a result. I would like to try it again to see what would happen without any tampered variables.
